Recently Rushmere community Runners went ‘Plogging’, when run leader Sarah Hodge organised a litter picking event for club members and their families.
“Have you ever heard of ‘plogging’?” Asks Sarah, “I certainly hadn’t but it turns out to be a fun activity suitable for all of the family, combined with community spirit. Originating in Sweden plogging combines jogging with picking up litter, a mash up of the Swedish ‘plocka upp’ (pick up) and jogging.”
Ipswich Borough Council was supporting groups who wanted to take part in DIGBY’s Big Ipswich Clean Up during Half Term by providing litter-picking kits. This gave the members of RCR the perfect opportunity to try out plogging.
“Armed with our litter pickers, strong bags and Hi-Viz jackets a merry band of us adults and children set out to do a loop from Ipswich School Sports Centre (ISSC) in Rushmere, where RCR meets twice weekly, to Heath Road, picking up litter as we went.
“As expected we found lots of plastic wrappers, cigarette ends, cans and bottles (full and empty). The more unusual things included a gardening glove and a Halloween mask!” Continued Sarah, “We were out for two hours and filled three large bags with rubbish before returning to ISSC for a welcome rest. It was good fun and we would definitely do it again.”
